San Francisco was first established in the same year the United States declared its independence, 1776, when Spanish settlers established a fort at the Golden Gate and a mission named for St. Francis of Assisi. The city remained relatively underpopulated until the California Gold Rush caused the city to rapidly increase its population in 1848. Thus, San Francisco became the largest city on the west coast.
Today, San Francisco is still thriving. It's the second most densely populated city in the United States as well as the most densely populated city in California. It's one of the largest cultural and financial metropolises in the United States.
