Description:With many fingers in many pots, Printed Matter is the world's largest nonprofit committed to the published work of artists. Printed Matter was founded in a crowded 1976 market as a for-profit alternative art space, but quickly established a niche by working with artists to produce books that could not be produced by mainstream publishers. Printed Matter continues to support the published work of artists, producing them cheaply and promoting them tirelessly. Over the last few decades, Printed Matter has plotted an organizational history through the art districts of lower Manhattan -- Tribeca, SoHo -- and the current Chelsea space features an expansive public library -- 15 thousand titles by 5 thousand artists -- in its corporate headquarters.
