The narrowest house in New York, 75 1/2 Bedford Street has nevertheless seen a long and storied string of residents since its construction in 1873. The poet Edna St. Vincent Millay lived here (and is responsible, along with her husband, for transforming a typical Italian working-class residence into an icon of Village elegance), followed by the cartoonist and children’s author William Steig, his sister-in-law the anthropologist Margaret Mead, and actors Cary Grant and John Barrymore. The house measures 9 1/2 feet wide on the outside, but only 8 ft 7 inches on the inside.
