Description:This tour commemorates art spaces that were no less significant for also being intentionally transient. Starting after World War II, downtown New York gave birth to a highly interconnected art world, often founded on collaboration, and later on performative, spontaneous, and temporary pieces. The nature of these works prohibit their being re-lived and re-visited, but by hearing their stories, and visiting their spaces, we can still gain some pleasure and insight from them. Most of the spots on this tour have moved on to other non-artistic incarnations, but the memory of the artists who worked there has impacted both the neighborhood and the art world. In many cases the art that temporarily sprung here reflected the space you will visit on the tour, or changed the space permanently because of its temporary presence.
