One of a very few recognizable NoLita landmarks -- and one that does its part to distinguish the neighborhood from busy, bustling nearby SoHo, the East Village, and the Lower East Side -- the Elizabeth Street Gallery and sculpture garden is more well-known as a kind of private park space, like Gramercy a mile north, than as a proper gallery: the plein air showroom occupies the entire width of the block between Elizabeth and Mott and heralds an eclectic collection of antique sculptures, some as old as the second century B.C., and contemporary decorative pieces, all riffs on older models or styles. Unfortunately, the gallery is rarely open to the public, but passersby can get an invasive view from either side of the street.
