Herb and Dorothy at The Clocktower
Hot Spots Near Here
Description:Founded in 1973, by PS 1 director Anna Heiss, The Clocktower Gallery stands on top of an old municipal building and houses the broadcasting room for Art International Radio. If you search for information about the Clocktower Gallery today, google devotes the first pages to the actor James Franco, who had his first solo exhibition in the space in 2010. But before that, the most famous show at the Clocktower belonged to a much less glamorous exhibitor, even by pre-James Franco standards.
The 1975 exhibition of the private collection of Herb and Dorothy Vogel, a middle-aged postal worker and reference librarian, respectively, left the art-world awe-struck and museums in bidding wars over their thorough collection of minimalist and conceptual art. The couple had cultivated relationships with many of the city’s most important artists, earning their reputation as voracious collectors over the years by paying the rent with Dorothy’s salary and devoting Herb’s entirely to art.
