The building was built in 1886 and designed by architect M. Louis Ungerich. The most distinguishing feature of the building is a plaque that was installed in 1936 claiming that the site of 82 Jane Street was the location of the William Bayard house and the place of Alexander Hamilton’s death. Many Greenwich Village historians consider this plaque to be erroneous.
