82 Jane Street is somewhat of an anomaly for the typically low-rise block. Located in the middle of the block, between Greenwich Street and Washington Street, 82 Jane is a five-story red brick apartment building that towers high above the neighboring three story town houses. The building was built in 1886 and designed by architect M. Louis Ungerich. The most distinguishing feature of the building is a plaque that was installed in 1936 claiming that the site of 82 Jane Street was the location of the William Bayard house and the place of Alexander Hamilton’s death. Many Greenwich Village historians consider this plaque to be erroneous.
