Now a lavishly remodeled luxury condominium, the old horse stable building at 157 Hudson Street was in the 1980s a famous dance club meets gallery meets happening called Area. The club was famous for its revolving themes, which ranged from the expected, like their opening theme, "Night" and then, "Fashion," to the avant-guard, "Confinement." The club would transform into a large scale installation that patrons participated in through elaborate costuming. The New York Times published a picture of the space on "Confinement Night" in which a massive wild boar was hung from the ceiling trapped in a web of ropes and straps. Madonna, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol and other 1980s staples of night world populated the club. The space represents a moment in nightclub history in which art, dance and nightlife were very much interconnected.
