After the Battle of Bunker Hill, the British Army destroyed the town of Charlestown. At the time the tavern was central to the community so it is assumed that the first building to be reconstructed after the colonials regained control of Charlestown.

It was built by Captain Eliphelet Newell. It is believed that he was a member of the Sons of Liberty, and a participant in the Boston Tea Party. He was an admirer of General Warren, also a member of the Sons of Liberty, and a prime mover and shaker of the rebellion. Unfortunately he was killed during the Battle of Bunker Hill, while he rallied the troops for a final assault. So as a tribute to the man and his patriotism Newell named the new tavern after General Warren. Make sure to stop by and visit this historic tavern where members of the Sons of Liberty and the King Solomon’s Lodge of Masons would meet over a pint. It is along the Freedom Trail in Boston.
