Thompson Square

The construction of Thompson Square began just after Charlestown was annexed into the city of Boston in 1875. The construction of Thompson Square began just after Charlestown was annexed into the city of Boston in 1875. The building itself covers 30,000 square feet, stands five stories tall, and is constructed in what is historically considered, High Victorian Gothic Style. To this day the building still stands, though it is no longer used as a bank, one can still find the old safes scattered about the building. The Square was initially built and owned by the Free Masons and the Charlestown 5 Cent Savings Bank. The Freemasons’ occupied the three floors at the top of the building and was used by them until the 1970’s when they moved out of the Great Hall to a new building. Today their mark is left on the building and is definitely something to check out when visiting. Also make note of the Gothic style and appointments to the building itself.
