Inside the Faneuil Hall Market Place is the Quincy Market built in 1826. When the city was incorporated in 1822, Faneuil Hall could no longer support the crowds that would flood the market. So Mayor Josiah Quincy organized the construction of the Quincy Market building. This was to be one of the first buildings built on the land filled in areas of Boston. When Faneuil Hall was first built, it was on the water’s edge at the docks. When Quincy Market was built, behind Faneuil Hall, it was at the docks on the water’s edge. In the 19th century its primary use was for foodstuffs and produce.

Today it still stands, and is primarily used for food, however most of the open-air markets are gone. Restaurants and fast food supplant the markets of old. Retail vendors outside sell trinkets and souvenirs. Bars and restaurants rule the basement to the Quincy Market while the second floor is primarily the Comedy Connection, one of Boston’s largest comedy clubs. Make sure to visit the next time you are in Boston, the air fills with the smell of wonderful food during the day and the sounds of people laughing and having a good time.
