Nestled in the remnants of the now defunct Combat Zone in Downtown Boston stands the Emerson College Campus. After Boston University closed down the School of Oratory, Charles Wesley Emerson founded the Boston Conservatory of Elocution, Oratory, and Dramatic Art. Over the years the school has had many different names, but eventually Emerson College was chosen and settled upon in reference to the school’s founder.
The school’s original focus was on the performing arts, but as time went on and technology progressed, the advent of broadcast technology hit the masses. The school added Broadcasting to its educational vision, and in 1949 the very first college radio station in New England came to be. Since Emerson’s inception it has held various locations throughout the city, by starting off by renting space, to being moved to Back Bay, now it resides in Downtown. From here it operates several cultural institutions in the Greater Boston area, one of the most famous being the Cutler Majestic Theatre, which now serves as the main stage for the school’s student productions.
The College has lead an interesting life starting off with not more then 10 students to now being one of the most well known names in the performing arts higher education arena. Be sure to stop and check out the productions by the students next time you visit, you won’t be disappointed.
