Dudley Square has served the Roxbury area for many years as a transit hub to Downtown Boston. Because of this it exists today as the area’s primary, densely packed commercial district. This area became mainly African-American during the 40’s-50’s, and serves as the center of African-American Urban city culture for Boston. After Martin Luther King Jr. died there was a riot in this area in response to his death, with many businesses torched causing some of the area’s most well known landmarks to no longer exist today. Roxbury has strong ties to African-American culture, and the civil rights movement, even Malcolm X lived here at one time.
