Codman Square is located smack in the middle of Dorchester and is populated by people from the lower to middle class; the population of Codman Square hails from at least 50 countries collectively. The intense population density and concentration of different cultures has created an extraordinarily diverse area that has gone through its share of hard times, the hardest having been the 70’s. Due to the city attempting to re-segregate via rent and poorly maintained housing, this caused the area’s housing market to collapse. The anger of the population of Codman Square was displayed by the burning of buildings, or abandonment of homes. At one point they couldn’t give away a house in the neighborhood. By the mid 1970’s civil organizations began to breathe life and development back into the area, creating the bustling, and thriving area of Boston it is today.
