Through native garden, trails and exhibits, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center provides a unique way to learn about and experience the beauty and value of native plants in Texas. It has woodlands, meadows, and 16 specialized gardens on 279 acres. It also has It also has remarkable buildings, and received a number of environmental and architectural awards when it was completed in 1995. The gift shop is stocked with flower-themed gifts and t-shirts.

There are research components to the Center as well. The Plant Conservation Program protects the ecological heritage of Texas by conserving its rare and endangered flora. The Land Restoration Program applies knowledge of ecological processes to restoring damaged landscapes. In 2006 the Center was incorporated into The University of Texas at Austin.

April is the prime month for Texas wildflowers, and the best time of year to visit the Center is between April and August. Special programs happen throughout the year, including a "holiday celebration of lights" in mid-December.
