The 1886 Bakery & Cafe is actually two separate kitchen operations at the modern day Driskill Hotel. Customers can dine-in, enjoying the Victorian dining room with its checkered floor and antique furnishings or the outdoor porch overlooking 6th Street. Customers may also drop by to pick up baked goods to go.

The Bakery is responsible for awesome desserts and what locals call the best croissants in Austin. If you think that a morning croissant is essential with your coffee, this is the place to go. Other baked specialties include the 1886 Chocolate Cake, Chocolate Caramel Mousse Cake, Tres Leche Cake, Lemon Chiffon Cake and more. These are available 'to go' in 6 and 10 inch cakes. The Cafe has recently revived the concept of Texan 'comfort food' with upscale ingredients and elegant preparation. At the time of this writing, the Monday night special was chicken fried steak, Wednesday nights for dry-rub Texas ribs and Friday night offered all-you-can-eat snow crab legs. Cafe dinner specials may change, so give them a call to confirm. Also on the menu: meatloaf, chili, stews, and pot pies - 'down home' cooking that people love. Famous food on the menu includes cheese soup based on a recipe by Texas food maven Helen Corbitt.
